SHEARLING JACKETS: BEST OF THE HIGH STREET

I’ve lost count of the number of times conversation has turned to seasonal dressing over the past few weeks. Most people have expressed a leaning towards winter clothes but I fall firmly into the summerwear camp. Partly because I have a rail jammed full of beautiful dresses, but also because I simply get sick and tired of wearing the same old coat week in, week out. At least this year I can pick a Good’un (or maybe several good’uns if I get a bit extravagant with the old Visa card). Top of the list is the shearling jacket – no surprises there then.

Burberry – the absolute ultimate in fluffy, shearling loveliness - is obviously devastatingly out of my price range, but  thankfully all the high street brands are (predictably) putting their own spin on the trend. Here are a few that made it onto my radar this week (helloooooo Whistles, Warehouse and M&S).

STYLE NOSTALGIA

Lately I’ve been pondering style nostalgia. I’m not talking about the endless revival of trends past which comprise the cyclical nature of fashion, I’m talking more specifically about a desire to embrace things which evoke memories of childhood. Leggings (even better, velvet leggings), leotards, alice bands and most intriguingly clothes that resemble animals!

Let me tell you a little story…

Every year, for my Junior school’s annual May fair,  the teachers would ask us to bring in donations to sell on the stalls. These donations – books, clothes, unwanted toiletry sets from The Body Shop that hadn’t been touched since Christmas –  were stored in the corner of the classroom where they continued to accumulate until the day of the fair.

Inevitably our beady little eyes scoped out any items we might want to procure come the big event, and on one particular year me and my best friend had our sights set on the same thing – a teddy bear backpack. That is literally the  only way to describe it. It was a brown bear with a zip across his back and two straps, and I wanted it so badly!

Come the day of the fair, my best friend and I walked to the school gates together in awkward silence – knowing one of us was to go home empty handed. The gates opened and we raced to the stall. If I remember correctly I reached the table first, but for some reason I hesitated for a moment. I don’t think I could cope with the idea that I would only be able to own the backpack at my friend’s expense. Unfortunately she had no such reservations and snatched the bear up immediately (bitch)…

I was so upset by the whole episode that my mum made me a hodge podge of a bear backpack, made from one of my old teddies, which she pulled all the stuffing out of, and the straps off a red backpack. Bless her! I wore it with pride.

Anyway, that is what this influx of animal fashion reminds me of. It makes me smile.

TREND OBSESSION: POPPED COLLARS

Something is happening to coat collars…

At February’s Fashion Weeks I noticed them as a design / styling element more than I ever have in the past. Collars have become the defining feature of a jacket. The pièce de résistance to look out for next time you’re coat shopping.

Three designs to look for?:

1. Elongated elegant lapels

2. Collarless coats and jackets

3. Collars designed to be permanently popped

BRINGING STYLE TO SARDINIA

Sardinia is charming and appealing in so many ways – the leisurely pace of life (quite the adjustment for two Londoners), the wine, the breads dipped in olive oil and balsamic, the wild and un-manicured flora and forna – but the island’s fashion sense leaves much to be desired. Why, I ask you, must the Italian’s insist on crystallising everything? Or wearing jeans with that pre-worn faded effect on the thigh area – what’s with that? Anyway, I tried my best to bring a little bit of style to the land that fashion forgot, here are a couple of my Spring time outfits:

Aviator Sunglasses: Ray-Ban, Army Surplus Jacket: Urban Outfitters, Silk Vest: Topshop, Cycling Shorts: Topshop, Bag: Zara.

Dress: River Island, Sandals: Topshop, Bag: Zara (as before)

Breton Stripe Top: Kookai, Blue Trousers: Zara, Leather Jacket: Topshop, Snood: French Connection, Belt: Vintage, Bag: Zara (as before)
