MY FAVOURITE SHOWS FOR SS11

In no particular order here are the Spring / Summer 2011 shows that worked for me…

Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri’s latest vision of the Valentino girl works so well for twenty-somethings. The long sleeves, the longer hem lengths, the lashings of lace and the youthful frills are all extremely Alexa Chung don’t you think?

Unique just continues to interest me more and more. What will head of design Karen Bonser come up with next? This season it was a little bit ethereal fairy and a little bit sci-fi (maybe it’s the hair that gives me that vibe). Whatever it is I’m in the market for it.

Words can’t express how much I adore the SS11 Chloe collection. So much beautiful skirtage – and with flats which seemed to make the entire outfit that bit chicer.  The look on the left is a favourite of mine.

There was a serious 70s St Tropez influence happening at the Marc Jacobs show. Floppy wide-brimmed hats, silky pants and giant, exuberant corsages all over the shop.  It was Jacobs at his glamorous best.

When I arrived at the Jaeger show I really didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. All that structure was just delicious.

I’m a secret lover of the bum bag (or waist bag which is really a much more pleasant term) and there were many on this catwalk. It seems like Jaeger is finally hitting its stride.

How gorgeous is this! Alberta Ferretti’s SS11 season is like a walk through an English Country garden.

I mentioned that Jason Wu impressed me in my NY round up post, and this is why. Cute girlie details (love that big organza bow), perfect tailoring and wonderful colour combos (really feeling the nude and navy on the left).

Julian MacDonald has never been one of my favourite designers but this season he’s really clawed his way back onto my radar. His use of texture and embellishment was appreciated and not overdone. perfect.

Slick, slick Yves Saint Laurent – what can I say? Love the oddly proportioned sleeves and pockets and the contradictory prim and proper blouse in racy sheer fabric.

The Pilotto show last season blew my mind and although this one didn’t quite match it I still loved their twist on modern lady-like dressing.

The colour palette did live up to expectations – camel + pale blue = a match made in heaven.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK ROUND-UP

It’s almost our turn London! But first here’s what you need to know about the shows from NY…

We’re going to see a lot of AW10 repetition next summer – lady-like longer lengths, transparency, camel colours, minimalism…the list goes on. But one of my favourite new trends is what I’m calling ‘blinding brights’. Acidic yellow popped up on several of the NY catwalks (a shade shown at Michael Kors was so intense I actually had to avert my eyes) and I love this feminine bow-waisted dress by Marc Jacobs.

Interesting also are the cropped wide-leg trousers. If it can translate to real women’s bodies and remain flattering then this could be a mico-trend next season.

Expect more leather for SS10, but with an edge this time around – Lazer-cut at 3.1 Phillip Lim or super shiny at Reed Krakoff.

Shorts have been absolutely everywhere at NYFW and are going to be the biggest fashion story of next summer. The celebs have already caught on – how many evening shorts have we seen on the red-carpet recently?

Belts are also carrying over from AW10 – love this tasselled one by Phillip Lim.

Shirts buttoned all the way to the collar (and actually just collars in general) will be a styling focal point next season. Hair should be pulled back for full effect.

Complex layering (the type that makes you question if it’s one single piece or several working together) has featured in several collections (Phillip Lim’s dress caused particular confusion front row).

Is this rusty gold look a little nod to McQueen’s final collection?

More billowing maxi dresses with ethereal sheer layers. Hem-lines look set to stay below the knee as a rule.

Pleats have been creeping in for a while now (I bought a floor-length pleated maxi this week in fact). Could it possibly have something to do with Sex and the City 2 and those Halston Heritage dresses?

My favourite show from NYFW. Jason Wu’s high-waited trousers (the trouser invasion is still going strong next season), and petal and bow detailing work so incredibly well with those all important styling touches (the saucer sunnies and electric blue turbans were a stroke of genius).
